Chapter Ten

At dawn, two weeks after the raid, Brendan walked down the hall in his stockinged feet on his way to check on Helena. He hated not saying goodbye before leaving for his meeting, but he didn’t want to wake her. Not only because Doc said she needed rest, but because he didn’t want to lie about seeing the three rangers coming in today.

He sighed, his mind sliding to Lucien Avery. Brendan had checked with Alex and Joshua. Sadly, the men knew the Helena of today better than he did, though that was quickly changing. He’d wanted their opinion on whether or not she could hide her anger and the betrayal she would feel toward Avery when she learned he was the mastermind of the raids. They agreed she was too open with her feelings and her emotions would show. Which left Brendan keeping the truth from her.

He weighed that against her anger when she found out he’d kept his suspicions about Avery to himself. But her safety was paramount. She’d be in grave danger if she saw Avery and couldn’t hide her feelings. Brendan decided keeping silent was worth the risk.

Mallory, Josh and Alex didn’t tell their wives for the same reason, and because all three women were in the family way. Their husbands didn’t want them upset.

Brendan was to meet up with the rangers about eight that morning, at a canyon a few hours’ ride northeast of Tierra del Verde. It was the perfect secluded rendezvous spot.

When the floorboards creaked under his feet, Helena opened her eyes and turned her head to where he stood in the doorway. Caught, he set his boots down in the hall and entered the room. “Good morning, lovey.”

“Don’t good morning me! Get me out of this bed, Brendan Kane. I mean it. I simply cannot lie here another day. I refuse to be a complacent patient from here on.”

He grinned. “You’re becomin’ a poet, Helena Kane.”

“Today isn’t a day for teasing me, Brendan,” she warned through her pretty teeth.

“It’s a sad day when my own sweet Helena all but growls at me because I said good mornin’. Are you restive?”

“I’ve rested enough. If I rest any more, I swear I’ll get a pistol and shoot the next person who tells me to!”

He valiantly fought a smile. “Restive, lovey. As in fidgety, agitated or irked.”

“I’m all those and more.” She took a breath. “I’m sorry I’m being impatient with you. I just woke from a dream about being chained to this bed.”

“In that case, I’ll tell you what we’ll do,” he said, and quickly let the lie fall from his tongue. Too quickly. “I have to meet a ranger who’s passing through, and give him a message from my commanding officer. I expect to be back no later than noon. Suppose I carry you outside for a few hours once I get back?”

He knew his skill at lying had kept him alive while dealing with the Lyons gang, but it wasn’t a gift he was particularly proud of.
